To all the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs) out there who never truly wanted to be accountants, this blog post is for you.
It's time to acknowledge that sometimes life takes us on unexpected paths, and despite the pressure and expectations placed upon us, we have the power to shape our own destinies.
Let's explore the reasons why you may have ended up in this profession and how you can find fulfillment and meaning in your career.
The Pressure and Misconceptions of Being an Accountant
During our university or college years, the accounting profession was heavily marketed to us as a safe and lucrative career choice. Being good at math and numbers made it seem like the natural path to follow. We may not have known what else to do or felt compelled to accept a job offer before graduation to secure financial stability.
Family and societal pressures, along with the allure of prestigious firms like the Big 4, further reinforced the idea that becoming a CPA was the "right" choice for our futures.
The Lack of Forward Thinking
In our youth, it's difficult to predict the long-term consequences of our decisions. We may not have fully comprehended what a career in accounting would entail or whether it aligned with our passions and values. The allure of a stable and respected professional designation, combined with the influence of our friends and the excitement of the recruitment process, made us overlook our true desires and ambitions.
Trusting Your Decisions
Hindsight is 20/20. Despite my occasional doubts during the CPA journey, I made the best decision based on the available information. As I reflect, I realize that I was less attuned to my intentions, personality, and values back then. Choosing this career path was a necessary step, and I appreciate it. However, transitioning from being a CPA to becoming a coach also poses uncertainties that I must acknowledge.
Embracing Your Journey
Today there is uncertainty. Embrace it closely. Let uncertainty be your friend.
1. Reflect on Your Passions:
Take the time to reflect on your true passions and interests. Identify the aspects of your current role that genuinely excite you, and explore ways to incorporate them into your career. Seek opportunities within the accounting field that align with your passions, such as working with clients in industries you find compelling or focusing on specific areas of accounting that resonate with you.
2. Pursue Non-Traditional Paths:
Remember that being a CPA doesn't limit you to traditional accounting roles. Use your skills and knowledge to explore non-traditional avenues within the profession. Consider roles in financial analysis, business development, or advisory services, where you can leverage your expertise while exploring different facets of the business world.
3. Seek Professional Development:
Invest in continuous professional development to expand your skill set and open up new career possibilities. Look for courses and certifications that align with your interests and allow you to diversify your expertise. This will not only make you more valuable to employers but also provide opportunities for personal growth and exploration.
4. Network and Connect:
Build a network of professionals both within and outside the accounting field. Seek mentors who can provide guidance and support as you navigate your career path. Connect with individuals who have successfully transitioned from accounting to other fields, and learn from their experiences and insights.
5. Embrace a Growth Mindset:
Shift your perspective and embrace a growth mindset. Understand that your CPA designation is not a limitation but a foundation upon which you can build a fulfilling career. Embrace new challenges, be open to learning, and seize opportunities for growth and advancement.
Now what?
To all the CPAs who are thinking "I don't want to be an accountant", it's never too late to redefine your path and find fulfillment in your career. Reflect on your passions, explore non-traditional paths, seek professional development, network with like-minded professionals, and embrace a growth mindset. Remember, your journey is unique, and it's up to you to shape it into something meaningful and fulfilling.
